I HOPETHISADMISSION
doesnt make you feel shortchanged.
but the fact is, in writing roadtesrs like this, I seldom so much as glance at my otebooks.
Most cars leave me with vivid enough memories that there's nothing to be gained by referring back. Not this time. The i30 is such a decent, respectable, benchmarked, optimised effort at a mid-size hatch that it refuses to be itself, and I can hardly remember a thing about it.

Right then. Notebook out. The i30 comes as a 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 petrol or a 1.6 or 2.0 diesel. The first one I drove had the 1.6 petrol with a fourspeed auto. Yes, just four. The engine is OK, if a bit boomy at high revs, but the sludgly transmission deals it a death-blow Then I had a go in a 1.4, which, because it has a slick manual, feels no slower - especially as it's a sweet engine that you dont mind revving. Then the 2.0 petrol, which is pretty well served by its 140bhp. All - the perrols are a bir noisy though.

They all have a steering set-up that's a little sticky, around the straight-ahead and never exacty eager, but the handlingt benign, roll well-controlled and body movements tidily damped. Brakes are progressive too. The ride seemed supple, but this was in Germany,
where the roads always flatter ride.

whether youie looking at it from the outside or the (adequately comfy) interior, the designers have done a fine job of nicking elements from all the competitors and synthesising them together. So it's modern, but in no way new. The i30 gets an
estate next year, and then a threedoor is likeiy. which the designers hope to be allowed to make coupe like, so it can partly replace the soon-dead Hyundai Coupe.

The prices aren't exactly bargainbasement, but a five-year warranty will net the i30 its buyers. Yes, it's an above-average car, but with little individualiry or brand equity, being
above-average isnt enough. Same story as with the Kia cee'd, and no wonder, since Hyrundai owns Kia, and the i30 and cee'd have different designs, but share almost everything beneath the skin. The Kia is supposed to be sportier; the Hyrundai, softer -
but the distinction is too slight to be noticed by most buyers.

Dont ignore Hyundai, mind. Up against Civics and Focuses and C4s, the i30 might nor occupy rhe Top Gear mindset just yer, but it's another step on Hyundais rapid road to building cars that will.

'top gear'의 비꼼은 어제 오늘 일도 아니건만... 이건 칭찬인지 깔보는 건지...
